We moved her in August from Anapolis to Deltaville and had the engine serviced, the chart plotter replaced and the bottom paint redone. Keith and Valotta accompanied me, Keith on the boat and Valotta in my truck on the move. We stopped in the Solomans night one and on to Deltaville the next day. Was a pretty uneventful trip. <div><br></div><div>I enlisted the help of a local sailboat Captain, for the jump South as my experience with offshore sailing is limited. I will leave out his name as he was a very nice guy and helpful but a few of his decisions were questionable. </div><div><br></div><div>Day one had captain myself and first mate Kathy up and moving with the high tide to escape Deltaville. We has a nice downwind motorsail maintaining 6 to 7 knots to the great bridge lock below Norfolk. We had intended to stop in Norfolk at a marina chosen by the captain. Unfortunately, I assumed he knew where he was going and he was expecting me to direct him there. I learned that he was not on top of the situation 12 miles past the mark. In his defense my iPad that I was using as a backup to the new chart plotter he was using had stop functioning properly. I believe that was the point that I stopped deferring to his judgement. We also lost the front running lights in the rain late in the day.</div><div><br></div><div> We started day two with dead batteries. I hooked up the generator to crank the engine and it started then stalled. After cranking for a bit it took hold but showed pressure on the fuel filters. We stopped early in Coinjock to see if we could get some mechanical help. I did some trouble shooting with Keith on the phone and determined that we had a valve left closed from the service in Deltaville restricting flow. We also found the alternator was not charging and a small fuel leak. </div><div><br></div><div>Day three. We received excellent service from the mechanic at Coinjock. Captain proved himself useless for diagnosing engine problems and to have no understanding of deisel engines. </div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day three 10:00 found our captain afraid to cross Abermarle sound in 10 knot winds. After researching the forcasts and assuring the captain we could handle 3 ft water, we decided to go. The day proved to be a good down wind sail through the sound and down the alligator river. We anchored in 25 knot winds for the night with 30 plus gusts. Captain again showed questionable judgement and went to bed without any thought to an anchor watch. I spent the evening in the cockpit with my portable heater and a drag alarm. The wind died around 1 so I retired below for the remainder of the night. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 4. Captain awoke and proclaimed himself well rested. (Easier to do I guess when it's not your boat) we headed down the Aligator river and stopped for the day in Belhaven. Nice small town. No real services. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 5. Motor sailed to Orient uneventful day. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 6. Motored to Moorehead City where we took on fuel and pumped out. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Continued on to swansboro had to dock in 30 knot winds pushing us back and in. I handled the boat as Captain had shown that he had no experience handling a full keel. Unfortunately Captain didn't handle the fenders properly as he was to busy spouting docking orders that made no sense. We ended up damaging the rub rail against the dock where a fender should have been placed. That was ok though " no real damage". I think he said If that is all we tear up on this trip we will be in good shape. Again, not his boat. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">Day 7. We motored on to Wrightsville Beach and found the last open dock to leave Zoe for a couple days while I took Kat to the Airport and picked up Keith for the open water leg of the trip. Captain top off to visit with friends and was nice enough to only charge half his rate for leaving the boat unattended. Not sure what is proper but I am not accustomed to paying someone to visit with friends. </font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">Day 8. While Capt enjoyed his visit with friends I found batteries and switched them out. Then headed to Charleston. </font></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 9. Captain still off fishing with friends for half price. I dropped Kat at the airport and picked up Keith. Headed back to the boat to prepare for an early departure. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 10. We headed out with the tide. Forcasts called for north winds 10 knots clocking east and building to 20 knots the next day. Plan was to head south and stop in Charleston. We took on fuel in Carolina beach. Seas were calm as we exited the Cape fear River. We motorsailed into the night. We decided on three hour watches. The autopilot was not effective with the following seas so hand stearing </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">was required. The captain suggested raising the main to help stabilize the boat. The seas built to around 10 ft on the beam which made everything difficult. I hit the bunk at midnight leaving Keith and the Captain in charge. I woke around 3 to the sound of the boom banging on the gallows and went up to see what was happening. The main was jibeing and banging in the wind and the Captain had added a full head sail. The wind had clocked around on the port quarter and the captain informed me that we were overpowered. I told him we needed to get the main in and reduce the head sail. He thought we should just ride it out until light. Again not his boat getting beat up. I rolled up the jib and worked my way up front as Capt showed no interest in fixing the problem he had caused. We pulled the main in tight turned directly down wind and I dropped the main. He told me later he regretted not reeling the main. I regretted going to sleep and leaving him in charge. We weren't expecting the 20 knot winds until the next day but Zoe reefs easily and should have been done long before we got to that point. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 11. The seas were still 10 feet and confused. The wind was 20 knots gusting to 25. We chose to bypass Charleston as Parker's weather suggested the east winds would hold another day then clock south which would have stuck us in Charleston for several days. We ended up spending 40 hours in those conditions and arriving at St Mary's river inlet at dawn. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 12. We decided to dump the Captain in Fernandina and head to Cocoa Beach on the inside as the winds had clocked south at 20 knots. We rested for a couple hours took on fuel and pumped out. Then Keith and I headed on to Jacksonville. We stopped for the night at Beach Marine. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Day 13. We rose early and headed out for Datona beach. We bumped in St Augustine cutting a corner to sharp but was able to make it back to the channel without hanging up. We went through the bridge with Earl's Girls who later gave us some good advice about some serious shouling. We ran aground in the middle of the channel but powered through the sand and ended the day at loggerhead marina. </span></div>Capt. Well, that finished the honeymoon part of the trip, next came the wedding. The kids had reservations at Long Beach so we caught a taxi at Sopher's Hole and headed over for the day. We had a beautiful setting and a very nice ceremony performed by a local minister. Definitely a fantastic finish to a great week. <br />

That doesn't mean that we left our boating dreams behind. I will attempt to chronicle the rest of 2014 and get started on the new year. <br />

August Zoe<br />
We decided it was time to get busy on Zoe's Toe rail.<br />

I spent 2 days hanging on the back railing fishing wires down the radar post and through the engine room to the router at the nav station. We are very pleased with the performance of the Rogue. <br />
<br />
Our youngest Shannon and her Hubby Dustin joined us for the boat show. We had a nice weekend at the show and good food at The Boatyard. <br />

<br />
Winter came early this year for Zoe. We had a beach wedding in the BVI and a hip replacement to get through so we spent the rest of October packing up. Zoe is currently on the hard waiting for spring and a new adventure. We are planning a spring move to Virginia for some cosmetic work and a fall move to Harbortown at Cocoa Beach Florida. <br />

We managed to knock the nav light off the bow pulpit getting away from the dock and then left the dink to get stuck under a dock as the tide came in. So the second half of the weekend was spent fixing the nav light and working the water out of the dink moter. Also noticed an extra pair of holes drilled in the inner hull of the dink. Of course these holes allowed the inner hull space to fill with water so I had to pull the plugs and hoist the dink on the davits to get it to drain. I will be filling those holes next trip. <div><br />

We had a very nice evening but our little 5411 diesel overheated on the way back. We made it back in and I went back Monday to tear down the water pump. I got the empellor replaced but discovered a water leak past the shaft. Fortunately, a replacement pump is still available and is on the way. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlr3nT7hRixUMF-ANuswMQZldcffXI85kEfhF5tHkpGS3N80wpLE010FabJUE0og_xFPOZuSYlcAJnIIhqupBMsF67cIkHh5RZwhJRTA3OD1sGIOEpfkhRCA5Jb6DR6SbmpEQGknUe8Gk/s640/blogger-image--142869494.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlr3nT7hRixUMF-ANuswMQZldcffXI85kEfhF5tHkpGS3N80wpLE010FabJUE0og_xFPOZuSYlcAJnIIhqupBMsF67cIkHh5RZwhJRTA3OD1sGIOEpfkhRCA5Jb6DR6SbmpEQGknUe8Gk/s640/blogger-image--142869494.jpg" /></a></div>Capt. I only got a day and got rained out so I headed back to Ohio to work. The leaking area stayed dry so I reinstalled the head liner and pronounced the repair successful. <br />
<br />
I headed to the boat this weekend expecting to get several days to work but had a breakdown and had to head back after a day to try to keep the business on track. I did manage a full day of teak repair and bung replacement. Hopefully, the next trip, I can start on the toe rail without needing to fix something else first. I guess I can't do anything but keep trying. <br />
<br />
As a side note, we spent a weekend on our Catalina 30 with our grandson and had a grand time. We launched our Advanced Elements Kayak and and it was definitely a hit. <br />

I traced the leak back to the (for want of the correct term) main Bullard post. The teak decking that buts up against it has deteriorated and the caulk needed some work. I dug out the bad wood and saturated the area with Mr Smith's penetrating epoxy. I used my Fein multi tool with a rasp to cut out the grooves and replaced the caulk in the grooves. It rained over night and appeared to stay dry. Will give the repair a little longer before I put the headliner back in. <br />
<br />
I also mounted the stainless steel strip to the back of the boat. To protect the paint from the dinghy. Will post a pic next trip. The real challenge for the day was fishing the dinghy into place to be lifted onto the davits by myself. It involved the pulley system for the lift, a boat hook and extra rope to maneuver the dingy around the docking posts.<br />

Two of the batteries in the starting bank had burst leaving the battery bin with acid in the bottom. We neutralized it with baking soda and rigged a block and harness to lift the batteries from under the quarter berth. The batteries were extracted and placed in heavy plastic bags to protect the boat from the acid. I came back to find Kat stripped down and cleaning the mess out of the battery bin. I asked why the lack of clothes and was informed that acid would ruin her pants. I guess it's ok to get acid burns on your skin if you can save a pair of jeans. <br />
<br />
We, also, finished rigging the sails so Zoe is ready to head for the bay. Unfortunately our season is cranking up so fun will have to wait for awhile. Gotta make money to pay Zoe's bills. Next up, Engine service and track down a new leak in the front cabin.<br />
<br />
I pick up my new ride tomorrow. <br />

It is the first weekend in May and we have the portable heater running to keep things toasty. Getting Zoe ready for the season has been a battle. The weather has not cooperated. I ran over for a Monday drop and managed to get from the marina to the dock without tearing anything up in a pretty stout wind. I had to plug the boat in to get the engine to roll over. Upon further investigation, I found a destroyed battery in the starter group. I suspect it froze and broke open over the winter. It is 11years old so I guess I won't complain. I brought 3 AGM batteries to replace the bank and will attempt to wrestle the old ones out tomorrow. For now I am going to enjoy my evening. Unfortunately, this spring hasn't given us much time to enjoy the boat and our busy season starts in earnest next week. Could be worse. I could be in Ohio working and not own a boat. <br />

Found the batteries dead and water in the bilge. Not to bad though. I plugged in overnight and decided to go with shutting down the pumps in favor of not freezing a battery. I am counting on the cover to keep the bilge from filling and will pump her out again in about 6 weeks. I think I will research solar panels to top off the batteries and allow me to leave a pump powered up. <div><br></div><div>Also discovered flaking bottom paint in a few areas. I am attributing this to bad adhesion due to substandard temps when we applied the paint. Will try again before we splash in the spring. Boat was cold and damp but wintering ok. </div><div>Capt. With the help of a couple friends I moved her over to Bert Jabins and had her pulled. <br />

We were fortunate and got the sails down and stored dry. We weren't as lucky on day two as the rain and the temperature both started to fall. We spent the afternoon putting the winter cover on in 37 degrees and a driving rain. Hopefully there is enough air flow to allow everything to dry out. I will probably make a run over in a week or two to make sure everything is alright. <br />

Winter temps don't drop to low in Annapolis. We have bubblers at the dock and I am told a heat source in the boat is all that is required to keep things from freezing. Kat and I ran over this weekend and I put antifreeze in everything I could get to with one arm. Fortunately the boat is set up with ports that I can hook up to and pump the antifreeze through. The only thing I couldn't get to was the engine and the heat pump. They set low and I have a heater plugged in until my shoulder will allow me to climb down in the engine area. <br />
<br />
If I pull her for a couple months I wouldn't have to drive over every couple weeks to check on her. I could also get the check valves working and do some Brightwork in the spring. <br />
<br />
I'll think about it awhile longer. <br />

I just read that one of the couples that I am following south on my I pad are having ahi tuna for dinner. Man, that hurt. Kat and I have spent a week each of the last several years running around the southern coasts on our Harley in search of good Sea food. I am a huge fan of ahi tuna. I prefer it "swimming around the dock". I think the best I have found was at Sharky's in Key Largo ,although, I had a steak in a restaurant on the inner harbor in Baltimore that was close. South Padre Island is a close third. <br />
<br />
The best chowder came from the Rockfish grill in Annapolis. Kat told me that if it was better than the chowder we had run across in a little bar in the middle of Pennsylvania, that would be the sign that we should buy Zoe. I swear it really was better. <br />
<br />
We tried manatee burgers at Bert's bar and grill in Matlacha Florida (not really manatee so don't hate me), there was a very cool kayak tour of Pine Island sound there also. We had great fresh snapper sandwiches on Sanibel Island.<br />
<br />
The worst we have ever experienced was in New Bern N.C. We were there looking at a steel hull that had never been finished. (thank god that deal didn't work out) and the gal at the desk at our motel suggested a place. The fish tasted just like the bottom of the river. The waitress asked if we needed a box and without thinking I replied "God No!". I think I might have hurt her feelings. <br />
<br />
Without question, the best lobster and the best price for lobster was at Sidney's Peace and love bar, Little harbor in the BVI. For 30 bucks we got a lobster that covered 2 full size plates and all the fixings. This is definitely one of my favorite places on the planet so far. <br />
<br />
Kat and I are excited about this years adventure as we just traded in our bike on a new one. We really didn't need to trade but the upgrades Harley made for 2014 are really something. Kat really never bonded with the last one after she fell off of it in a parking lot within the first 300 miles and broke her elbow. She rode the rest of the weekend with her arm strapped to her side, refusing to let me take her home. No, she isn't hard headed. Hopefully she will get alone better with this one. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrrjF9p7UGC9IrkhEWpkj7Esd7YU_yZlRx2fssmqktFZ_5Ob3E6yiLcAhmg9nCQbgHuzs_XWoaBA7vrGgXt7whCE33rADWW1whSrOzwGuG3nIcX9wFZmHFoWUQ-tlkh7E1MSvUMD1w5g/s640/blogger-image-266054224.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrrjF9p7UGC9IrkhEWpkj7Esd7YU_yZlRx2fssmqktFZ_5Ob3E6yiLcAhmg9nCQbgHuzs_XWoaBA7vrGgXt7whCE33rADWW1whSrOzwGuG3nIcX9wFZmHFoWUQ-tlkh7E1MSvUMD1w5g/s640/blogger-image-266054224.jpg" /></a></div>Capt. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLTe4bwD6srixzE11TaqlHGZPNeKDEireRseGLVOq2Q7UUVoqMfzxv2PYfb6N-8CI2nZOnGA-am2Mv2v2-6TZgcFawsangPGRrUw9inCazgynTgryJPYuXZ41Te3pKu8P7MabO0hcbyAU/s640/blogger-image-1650242895.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLTe4bwD6srixzE11TaqlHGZPNeKDEireRseGLVOq2Q7UUVoqMfzxv2PYfb6N-8CI2nZOnGA-am2Mv2v2-6TZgcFawsangPGRrUw9inCazgynTgryJPYuXZ41Te3pKu8P7MabO0hcbyAU/s640/blogger-image-1650242895.jpg"></a></div><br />
<br />
The only marking on the clock are. Housing India, Movement Germany. Fortunately, Kat came across Moore and Co on the Internet and was able to match up a movement from Pictures on the site. I reassembled the clock with the new movement and I think we are in business. The time is very good and the tide seems to follow the Atlantic coast pretty well. <br />

We spent the weekend hanging in Annapolis. I'm am very excited to report that our fridge problems turned out to be an electrical problem with the water cooling pump. I am also happy to report that the windlass problem was a wire left off during the bow repair this summer. Two problems solved with very little expense. Wow that never happens! <br />
<br />
We found a cleaner to hopefully polish up our windshield and bought a sewing machine. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqI2YtCXNnZkGVrJhSZqZzyd4jEFvg8T09PKUY7yvV9DkSpqUaqLpE9J6sSGbYdwFVCQRUxxj1LD0fucSOd-YWvyuaP1eL_8k6Gz79W7C9tfxNcQAnHzD4tvc0p6mDsackqkgNyCL-UtU/s640/blogger-image-237179583.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqI2YtCXNnZkGVrJhSZqZzyd4jEFvg8T09PKUY7yvV9DkSpqUaqLpE9J6sSGbYdwFVCQRUxxj1LD0fucSOd-YWvyuaP1eL_8k6Gz79W7C9tfxNcQAnHzD4tvc0p6mDsackqkgNyCL-UtU/s640/blogger-image-237179583.jpg"></a></div><br />
<br />
I have been promised that I will be able to sew with this machine. I made the salesman give me his cell #. I am going to bug him if I can't figure it out. It just occurred to me that I didn't try his # out. I wonder if he gave me somebody else's. Hmmm. <br />
<br />
We also found this wonderful oil lamp at a tent sale complete with dents to replace the one that Zoe would have had originally. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNhDXy0I0pA9p21wnUfg4p7ewm19-1ruHOiwcu7-b9f9A-4WwAr23nRwGGmF4jtTXyywGVJktyGvotABpTYQaQy1HfB_mYRL1BUVWUtz2AEQILzPipzo-KN8iHoQvK3wOfON_gTINnmhY/s640/blogger-image-376464951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNhDXy0I0pA9p21wnUfg4p7ewm19-1ruHOiwcu7-b9f9A-4WwAr23nRwGGmF4jtTXyywGVJktyGvotABpTYQaQy1HfB_mYRL1BUVWUtz2AEQILzPipzo-KN8iHoQvK3wOfON_gTINnmhY/s640/blogger-image-376464951.jpg"></a></div><br />
All in all, a pretty good weekend. Next up, find a new movement for Zoe's time and tide clock. <br />

It drives my crazy to not be able to run down to the boat and just check to make sure everything is ok. I had raised the dink on its davits the last time we were there. Upon my return I found one of the tubes had gone flat. I suspected the valve as the o-ring sealed cap was in very poor condition. I tracked down a new cap at Annapolis Inflatables and decided now might be a good time to do a little rehab. I loaded the dinghy in my pickup with the help of my tommy lift.(everyone should have one of these) and headed home. I picked up some sealant from west marine and have been flopping said dink around my back yard to distribute the sealant in the tubes. <br />
<br />

I think I'll do a little fiberglass touch up and maybe buy some paint to dress it up. <br />
<br />
Our other addition is a used inflatable kayak. <br />

<br />
We spent the morning cleaning and packing. One of my chores was to hang the motor from the back rail and raise the dinghy on the davits. This is a bit of a challenge as we have a canoe stern. I have worked out a system in which I raise the motor to its bracket using the lift on the radar mast then hook up the dinghy and climb over the stern rail into the boat. After dragging my overweight self over the rail and raising the dinghy, I realized I had left the plug in. Of course that won't work as the dinghy would collect water and collapse the davits. I tried to stretch between the rails and reach the plug rather than going back through the whole process. I managed to get the plug out but had extended to far and could not pull myself back through the rails. All I could think was "Oh lord, I can't call the rescue squad". I could see myself on the evening news. "fat guy stuck upside down between rails on his sailboat, film at 11:00". Anyway, fear of humiliation gave me enough strength to squeeze my rib cage back through the rails. Man did that hurt!<br />
<br />
So for the next year Zoe will berth in Annapolis while we work out more kinks and plan our eventual escape. <br />

<br />
Woke up from a great nights sleep on Mill Creek. We got everything stowed and I hit the switch on the windlass to raise the anchor. Of course, nothing happened. I guess I will add another line to the repair list. After a great morning workout hauling 60 feet of chain and a 60 lb spade, we headed out to calm water and very little wind. I am happy to report that the drive line repair was a success and we experienced much less vibration as we motored north. <br />

Since Zoe really doesn't sail in much less than 15 knots, we zig zagged between the boats and headed on. <br />
<br />
We reached Annapolis around 3:00 after 7 hours of motor sailing and jumped off the dock into a taxi to rent a car and retrieve our truck from Point Lookout. <br />

Zoe is back together and we are headed for the Solomon islands. We are timing our departure from Point Lookout Marina on the Potomac for a high tide and falling tide to ride down the river. <br />
<br />
Our plan was perfect. We had a nice reach out of the river with 10 to 15 knots from the south. We turned the corner and had a downhill ride to the Solomons. Total trip time 5 hours. We anchored in Mill creek. We found plenty of water and a quiet setting for the evening. <br />

Turns out our driveline failure was a brass shear pin in the drive coupling. I will elaborate further when I get back to the boat and check it out. I think it would have been a good idea to find out where the shear pins were before we took off the first time. Man do I feel stupid. <br />
Upon further review, the part that failed was the brass key stock in the propellor side of the shaft coupling. it apparently was installed incorrectly as only about a third of the key was in the keyway. I will mention that the last installer was Diversified Marine Services in Annapolis. I will also mention that they did my winterization last fall and the fridge hasn't worked since. I can't actually place blame for the fridge but it was working before and was not after. I have to say I am impressed with the service at Lookout Point. Unfortunately, it is a long run up there. Time will tell but our conversations have led me to believe the they have a pretty good handle on the repair business. They certainly seem to have a following in the big money go boats. We are going to do a short haul, check the shaft and get the prop reconditioned and balanced. Hopefully the tranny will last until we are ready to repower in a few years. <br />

We headed out about 3:00 and will return in a week to see how things are progressing. We have found ourselves, not only paying for space in Point Lookout but also, a dock in Deltaville and our new one in Annapolis. hopefully, the outlays will slow down soon. <br />

After checking things out and conferring with the other mechanics, it was determined that our Volvo transmission, although appearing to have been well maintained, had simply worn out. I am not sure what the average lifespan of a transmission is but this one appears to have lasted for approximately 3000 hours. we are hoping for a short layover while the trans is rebuilt. We have been told about a week and a half. Kat and I keep hearing the Eric Stone song "It'll be ready tomorrow". We were able to rent a car from Enterprise and head back to Deltaville and retrieve the truck so we could head back to work for Monday. That killed the rest of the day as it was a 6 hour journey. Capt. Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029820434947568691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799384641903738933.post-64956961321840910772013-08-18T15:53:00.001-07:002013-09-03T19:11:00.795-07:00Heading NorthThursday Aug 15th, we got up early to take on water and head out for a long day to the Solomon's. We attempted to time our arrival at the Potomac River on the flood tide as the wind was to be from the northeast. Getting away from the dock proved to be a challenge as the area is a little tight and Zoe will not respond in reverse and immediately tries to turn down wind upon stopping. We had to maneuver back to a docking piling and hold the bow while the stern floated around in order to get headed in the right direction. <br />
After taking on water, we headed out without incident and turned north. Wind was tight on the nose so we decided to motorsail. About 6 hours into a beautiful day, <br />
<br />
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfHN7bYJc3PBW35wsR1T-5GfAsj53cM3SLj64zxHvWUZkRaKdO9VuGVKZqgp2_31hy4no_v5I2c2-HyM64IBqGx3xxuE2asuk7BnsQnwVYqGCiihHj5dVEwfL1n8X2No7TP3vSn5SPyw/s640/blogger-image--404334306.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfHN7bYJc3PBW35wsR1T-5GfAsj53cM3SLj64zxHvWUZkRaKdO9VuGVKZqgp2_31hy4no_v5I2c2-HyM64IBqGx3xxuE2asuk7BnsQnwVYqGCiihHj5dVEwfL1n8X2No7TP3vSn5SPyw/s640/blogger-image--404334306.jpg" /></a></div><br />
We developed a new noise. My first thought was something vibrating in the storage area below as we were in 50 feet of water with no obstructions in sight. After about an hour the noise disappeared and the engine smoothed out as if I had shifted into neutral. After shifting back and forth and not finding any drive in either direction we decided we had a serious problem. I dug out the lazarette and determined that the shaft was still in place and we were not taking on water. To shorten the story we were in virtually no wind were not forecasted to get any more for at least a day so we made the call to be towed in for repair. About 6 hours later after a lovely dinner and a very pleasant cruise up the Potomac thanks to Tow Boat US, we ended the day at Point Lookout Marina. <br />

After a long summer of waiting for repair we left Deltaville Yachting Center (thanks to Lew and the crew there). We headed back to Stingray point for the afternoon to prepare for a trip back to Annapolis on Thursday. After taking on fuel we headed for the pump out at Stingray but were unable to dock as there was a transient tied off for the night. We decided to take on water on the way out in the morning.
